Cuba circa 1999: Outside Havana, a crew of machederos breaks for lunch. These men, like all workers in Cuba, are celebrated as heroes. Starting before dawn they will cut sugar cane by the acre. A simple but fortifying lunch of corned beef sandwiches and rice water revitalizes them for the afternoon.
